Mission of the Altoona Fire Department:

The purpose of the Altoona Fire Department shall be to preserve life and property in the City of Altoona and surrounding communities with the approval of the City Council, in case of fire and/or other emergency: to promote through safety education the prevention of fires and other emergencies.

As a combination department comprised of full- and part-time individuals along with paid-on-call volunteer membership striving to provide the necessary emergency response and services which they are summoned. Dedicated paid-on-call individuals are responsible for all types of emergency responses ranging from basic to advance life support medical responses, fire investigations, suppression, rescues, and extrication.

Individual training ranges from the minimum of Firefighter I and Emergency Medical Technician – Basic certification level up to advanced firefighter certifications and advanced paramedic level individuals. The various backgrounds of paid-on-call volunteer department members benefit not only the individuals themselves, but also their employers and citizens served.

The Altoona Fire Department responds to all types of diverse emergency responses and needs of the citizens served and are the local ‘first responders' in case of any large-scale incident or threat to the area.

Working closely with the Building Department the Fire Department takes a pro-active approach to plan review along with fire and life safety inspections and enforcement. The Fire Department assists companies in the area with annual safety training and provides CPR and first-aid classes to their employees when needed.

As a leader in the emergency services area of Eastern Polk County , the Altoona Fire Department provides and facilitates joint training efforts with surrounding mutual aid communities. This enhances the working relationships and provides a unity of capabilities when the need arises during multiple jurisdictional assignments.
