Mayor and Council

The Mayor and Council are responsible for setting policies for the City of Altoona with input from the citizens. The Council meets by ordinance the first Monday of every month. However additional meetings are added as needed with the council currently meeting the first and third Mondays of the month at 6:30 pm at City Hall located at 407 – 8th Street SE in the council chambers.

Timothy Burget

Tim Burget has been Mayor of Altoona for 20 years and is a member of the Mid-Iowa Association of Local Governments. Before being elected as Mayor, Tim served on the Altoona City Council for eight years. He was a Board Member of the Metro Waste Authority for 20 years and is a past Director of the Iowa League of Cities. Tim has also served on the Energy and Environment and Small Cities Committees for the National League of Cities. Tim is currently President of the Altoona Area Historical Society.

Tim has lived in Altoona all of his life. He and his wife, Diane, have been married for 32 years, and have one daughter. He is a graduate of Southeast Polk High School and Drake University. Tim owns and operates Burget Mill, a feed and grain business that has been in Altoona for over 100 years.

 
Kyle Mertz

Kyle Mertz works for Sun Life Financial. After graduating from Drake University with a degree in international business, Kyle was employed by the American Republic Insurance Company. There he worked as the district manager for the State of Wisconsin. He has also spent time as a district manager with Maytag.

Kyle is a member of the National Health Underwriters Association and the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors. Kyle is currently a member of the East Polk Rotary Club, the Altoona Chamber of Commerce and Young Variety. He also volunteers his time with Junior Achievement, YMCA “Partner with Youth” campaign and the 2009 AAU Junior Olympic Games event operations committee. Kyle is member of the Altoona Leadership Class – Fall 2009.

In his free time, Kyle enjoys outdoor activities such as fishing and hunting, and spending time with his wife, Amanda. Kyle is also active at King David Lodge.

Gerald Nolin

Gerald Nolin served on the City Council from 1970-80and Chair of the Planning & Zoning Commission from 2001-08.

My wife, Joan, and I, married 45 years, moved to Altoona in 1963. We raised our two childred here and now, they, their spouses, and three grand-children are living here at this time. Joan served on the Altoona Planning & Zoning Commission from 1965-70 and helped start the Altoona Golden Agers here in 1972. We have been very active in our Altoona Church and the Altoona Lions Club for many years. Term Expires 12-31-2011.
 
Joe Riding

Joe Riding has been a councilperson for 6 years. He is currently serving on the MPO Board and Council Liaison to Altoona Chamber of Commerce. Term expires 12-31-13.
 
Michelle Sloan

Michelle Sloan became a Councilperson in October of 2006. She was reelected in January 2009 to her second term as a councilperson.
She is currently, or in the past has been involved in the following organizations:

* Chamber of Commerce Board Liaison
She is committed to responsible growth in our community and youth sports programs.
As an eighteen year Altoona resident she has volunteered many hours in PTA, Altoona Little League, & her church. She is a previous preschool teacher and is currently an administrative assistant at Willowbrook Elementary. Term expires 12-31-13.
 
Stacey Warren

Stacey Warren is in her second term as a councilperson. Council Liaison, Altoona Public Library Board. Member, Board of Adjustment (2003). Member, Parks Board (1999-2002). Chair, Campus/Pool Committee (1999-2001). Greater Altoona Community Service Campus, Board of Directors (2000 – 2005). Greater Altoona Girls Softball Association, Board Member (2000-2004). Southeast Polk Community School District, Search Committees for Associate Principals (2005) and Activities Director (2008), Facilities Subcommittee (2003-2004), High School Communications Council (2004-2007); Booster Club, Century Club Member. Pi Beta Phi Fraternity, Collegiate Regional Programming Specialist (2006 – present), Alumnae Advisory Committee, Iowa State University, Member (1994 - 2006). Stacey was also named to the Des Moines Business Record 2009 “Forty Under 40” class. Term expires 12-31-11.
