Bike Trails

The City of Altoona is excited about the extensive trail system we have to offer. There are over seventeen miles of trails with more planned each year. These trails offer alternate modes of transportation with many routes to our community businesses, attractions, city buildings, and parks. The City of Altoona trails range from six foot to ten foot wide and are mostly asphalt. Our maintenance goal is to eventually have all eight to ten foot trails made of asphalt.

The City of Altoona trails system also connects with the 4-mile trail, which goes to Pleasant Hill and then into the Des Moines trails system. When the trail is all completed it will connect to the 5 county trail system, which will run northeasterly to the Chichaqua Valley Trail.

Some of our most used trails are the Prairie Heritage Trail at 1.2 miles behind Hy-Vee and heads west with branches to Venbury development, Altoona Skate Park, Aquatics Park, Campus and connects directly with the 4-mile trail. From the Prairie Heritage trail at the campus you can use the pedestrian bridge to cross 8th Street SW head east and visit Lions Park, Greenway Park, and Sam Wise Youth Complex. This trail will eventually join the Chichaqua Valley Trail.

Phoenix Park is surrounded by an oval trail with a length of 1650 feet that you can exercise on while the kids play in the park.

Our community is dedicated to trails and safe routes for children and adults alike to exercise, enjoy the outdoors, and take advantage of the many great things Altoona has to offer.
