Residency Requirements
In order to receive a library card, patrons must live within the corporate city limits of Altoona, be a rural resident of Polk County or live in a city whose library belongs to the State Library’s Open Access program.  Fees may apply for anyone not meeting these criteria.

Receiving a Card
In order to receive a library card, patrons must present identification with their current address on it.  Examples of such identification are: driver’s license, bills, magazines, etc.  At the time identification is presented, a registration form must be filled out.  Cards held by Altoona residents expire in three years, all others expire in one year.  Address changes must be reported immediately with verification of your new address.  Cards are renewable as long as there are no outstanding fees or fines.

Children under the age of 14 must have a parent’s or guardian’s signature on their application.

Temporary Cards
Temporary cards are issued to patrons who are in the area working for Prairie Meadows and/or Adventureland Parks on a short-term (not permanent) basis.  Proof of employment is required and cards are issued for six months.

The Altoona Public Library is located at 700 8th St. SW.

Cardholder Responsibilities
Registered borrowers must present their library card in order to check out materials.  Cardholders are responsible for all materials check out on his/her card.  It is recommended that you do not lend your card to others.  Borrowing privileges will be restricted if there are six or more overdue items or if there are fines accrued of $10 or more.

Under Iowa Code 22.7 libraries are not allowed to release information that may identify a patron’s library use, including items checked out or asking for information.  This includes information about a minor’s library use to a parent, between spouses or other family members.  Accounts can be accessed by visiting the library, via telephone by using identifying information or through the on-line catalog using the PIN you choose when you register.
