Streets Department

The Altoona Streets Department is overseen by the Public Works Director. The streets supervisor is in charge of daily activities. The Streets supervisor is Rob Taylor, please feel free to contact Rob during office hours Monday through Friday from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm at 515-967-2734 with any questions or comments. If there is an emergency regarding streets during off hours please call the floater phone at 515-710-7449.

Primary functions of the streets department include but are not limited to:

  • Maintain, clean, and repair 140+ lane miles of roadway and right-of-way
  • 22 sets of traffic signals to repair and maintain
  • Replace and repair over 6000 signs
  • Perform snow removal on all city streets plus county roads under contract with Polk County secondary roads
  • Trim and remove tree’s on city property and right-of-way
  • Operate and maintain all excavation and road maintenance equipment
  • Review and comment on construction site plans submitted to the city
  • Work directly with the building maintenance department on building repairs and alterations
  • Assist water, wastewater, and parks with excavation, grading, and repair of city utilities and grounds
  • Do all concrete paving repair on city property.
