Transformer on the move will block traffic on 1st Ave N, NE 62nd Ave and 25th St NW Sunday, Nov. 5

MidAmerican Energy needs to move a large transformer from north Altoona to its facility on NE 56th St/34th Ave NW on Sunday, Nov. 5. Because of the size of this transformer, roads will be completely blocked to traffic as it navigates along the route. This will cause closures at times along several roads, including northbound lanes of 1st Ave N, north of the Intrinsic Ag facility (102 1st Ave N), and all of NE 62nd Ave where it turns to travel westbound to MidAmerican’s facility. This move will take several hours to complete, and will start at 7 a.m.
Transformer Move Map Nov. 2023
The City of Altoona is partnering with MidAmerican Energy and the City of Bondurant to ensure a smooth transport for the transformer. City police will be blocking intersections, closing roads, and managing traffic along the route as the transformer is moved. Once the transformer has passed through the area, police and streets crews will reopen portions of the route to traffic, and close further portions of the route as the transformer approaches. We advise anyone who can avoid traveling in this area between 7 a.m. and Noon on Sunday, Nov. 5 to do so.

This move will take place weather permitting. We will share any updates or changes to this planned move on this page.
